Your Net Worth: The Number That Tells the Real Story of Your Financial Life

By Martin Cloutier, CFP®, CIM® – June 15, 2026

Before you can decide where to go, you need to understand where you are today. That is why one of the first things we look at in financial planning is something much simpler: your personal balance sheet.

A personal balance sheet gives you a clear picture of what you own, what you owe, and what is left over. That final number is your net worth.

It may sound simple, but it is one of the most important numbers in your financial life.

Most people think financial planning starts with investments.

  • What should I buy?
  • Should I contribute more to my RRSP?
  • Is my portfolio positioned properly?

Why This Number Matters?

Your balance sheet is not just an accounting exercise. It is the foundation for better financial decisions.

Can you afford to retire? Should you pay down debt faster? How much investment risk makes sense? Are there tax planning opportunities? Could your estate face liquidity issues later on?

These questions are difficult to answer without knowing what you own, what you owe, and where everything is located.

Looking only at individual accounts can be misleading. You may know your RRSP balance, your TFSA balance, and the approximate value of your home, but without putting everything together, you may miss important planning opportunities.

A complete balance sheet can help identify whether too much wealth is concentrated in one asset, whether debt is slowing progress, or whether your financial strategy needs adjustment.

From Snapshot to Strategy

A balance sheet starts as a snapshot. But when updated regularly, it becomes a way to track your financial progress over time.

During your working years, you generally want to see your net worth grow as savings increase, investments build, and debt declines. In retirement, the focus often shifts toward income, tax efficiency, withdrawals, and estate planning.

Eventually, your balance sheet becomes your estate. The assets, liabilities, taxes, and remaining wealth all determine what may be passed on to the people and causes that matter most to you.

That is why net worth is more than just a number.

It tells the story of your financial life.

And the clearer that story is, the better decisions you can make for the future.
